Palletized Packaging Testing: Equipment for Unit-Load Applications

APPLICATION FOCUS
Equipment for Your Loaded Pallet
Manufacturers and packaging laboratories planning palletized-load testing need equipment that fits the assembled shipment and reproduces the required input. Start with loaded dimensions, mass, handling route and the test objective, then review the relevant impact, vibration or compression configuration.
DERUI supplies material and packaging testing equipment. This application page helps define an equipment enquiry; it is not an offer of independent testing, ISTA certification or automatic coverage of a complete distribution procedure. An incline-impact rig is one potential component—not proof of a fully equipped unit-load laboratory.

Define What Actually Ships
Packaged products
Record contents, carton construction, loaded case mass and any variation within the load.
Pallet and pattern
Identify pallet type and condition, layer arrangement, total height and any overhang or gaps.
Restraint system
Document wrap, bands, corner protection, slip sheets or other elements used in the actual packing process.
Photograph the assembled specimen from several sides and preserve the packing specification. A supplier or process change can alter the unit load even when the nominal pallet dimensions remain the same. This is especially important when reducing packaging or changing carton orientation.
Describe whether the load remains intact. If a distribution centre breaks it down into individual cases, the downstream shipment may need a separate evaluation. An intact-pallet result cannot automatically be extended to the case after depalletizing.
03 / APPLICATION GUIDE
Map the Route to the Requirement
Record the transport mode, loading access, transfers and actual handling method. Full-truckload, mixed less-than-truckload and regional store delivery are different situations. The presence of a pallet alone is not enough to select a test procedure.
ISTA lists distinct procedures for unitized and other distribution applications. Select the current procedure and revision with the customer or responsible laboratory. Review a revised procedure before using an older worksheet; apparatus names and remembered test sequences are not a substitute for that document.
Use the general distribution test-plan framework for the wider route assessment. This page concentrates on the assembled unit load and its configuration, not a universal list of mandatory tests.

Match Capabilities, Not Just Capacity
| Capability | Configuration questions | Limit of the result |
|---|---|---|
| Compression / top loading | Does the usable area fit the required specimen? What force, restraint and control are specified? | A maximum capacity label does not establish a suitable unit-load test arrangement. |
| Vibration | Can the system support the assembled mass and centre of gravity with the required motion and control? | A fixed-displacement simulator is not automatically a random-vibration system. |
| Impact / handling | What impact direction, loading interface and handling equipment are required? | Incline impact, horizontal acceleration and forklift handling are not interchangeable. |
| Climate exposure | Does the plan require controlled conditions, and can the complete load be accommodated? | Testing a small board coupon does not condition a complete pallet load. |
These capabilities are possible parts of an application, not a prescribed sequence. Specialized load-stability or horizontal-acceleration work may require apparatus beyond an ordinary incline-impact tester. List that requirement explicitly rather than implying it is included.

Record Movement and Product Condition
01Set acceptance before testing
Define unacceptable product damage, restraint failure and movement. Use the limits agreed by the responsible customer; do not invent one displacement limit for all loads.
02Document the initial assembly
Record layer alignment and reference photographs. Identify the load, materials, assembly method and any conditioning.
03Observe without changing the test
Record the specified inspection points and outcomes. Do not tighten wrap or restack the load during a sequence unless the authorized plan allows it.
04Review the actual failure mode
Distinguish carton crushing, interlayer sliding, pallet damage and product damage. Link each observation to the test stage and the proposed change.
A successful evaluation supports a defined configuration and scope. It does not prove compliance with all transport regulations or safe performance on every road. Use shipment feedback to assess whether the selected evaluation addresses the real issue.

Match the DERUI Equipment Route
| Equipment route | Useful starting information | Scope to put in the proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Inclined impact tester | The product page lists 500 kg standard payload and a 1000 kg configuration option, with a 1200 × 1200 mm carriage and larger options. | Review the exact assembled specimen, impact speed, carriage size, centre of gravity, loading access, restraint and guarding. Published options are not a pallet-specific approval. |
| DR-B216 rotary transport simulator | Published fixed displacement is 25.4 mm, with a 100–300 CPM operating range. | Consider only for compatible rotary / fixed-displacement work. The live page does not define payload or platform dimensions; it is not a documented full-pallet random-vibration system. |
| DR-B211 box compression family | Published force configurations are 10, 20 and 50 kN for the listed box-test arrangements. | A single-case configuration must not be offered as whole-pallet compression without a separately defined usable area, height, load path and approval. |
The impact product is a concrete starting point for a compatible loaded pallet. The other routes remain test-specific: if the procedure requires a random profile, a different vibration architecture is needed. Discuss it through the vibration systems category rather than substituting the DR-B216.
For example, a buyer requesting impact evaluation of a loaded pallet should send the assembled mass and footprint first. A buyer requesting a complete procedure should also supply every required test element. These are different equipment scopes and should not receive an indistinguishable quotation.

Specify the Purchase Deliverables
Machine and interfaces
Name the selected machine, carriage or platen, specimen limits, loading method and site layout in the quotation.
Measurement and records
Define the input to be measured, data output, report fields and verification documents required at acceptance.
Project boundary
Separate supplied tests from unprovided capability, installation work, utilities and any external laboratory or certification activity.
Request a representative demonstration or acceptance plan for the ordered configuration. Use actual setup photographs, a drawing and a sample output file when available; none is implied to exist for your pallet until supplied. Do not accept a generic “ISTA machine” description as a complete laboratory specification.
08 / APPLICATION GUIDE
Start an Equipment Enquiry
Can DERUI quote from pallet dimensions alone?
Dimensions and mass start the review. The required input or procedure, handling and loading constraints are also needed before a configuration is approved.
Does the 1000 kg impact option cover every 1000 kg load?
No. Payload, carriage footprint, centre of gravity, impact conditions and loading arrangement must match together.
Does this page offer an ISTA test certificate?
This page is for equipment configuration and purchase. Test execution, certification and laboratory accreditation are separate activities and are not included merely by buying a machine.
